Q: What are the best dietary supplements to prevent macular degeneration?
A: The Age Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS 2) followed over 4000 participants over a period of 5-6 years to see which dietary supplements were of most benefit in preventing age related macular degeneration (AMD). The results of AREDS 2 showed that lutein and zeaxanthin, in addition to vitamin C, vitamin E, copper and zinc reduced the risk of developing advanced AMD over the five years of the study.
A new supplement on the market, MDeyes, is the first supplement in Australia to contain all of the above nutrients in a once daily soft gel capsule. The fact it is a once daily capsule compares favourably to other AMD prevention supplements, which require three tablets to achieve the same dose as per the AREDS 2 study. MDeyes is available from Bill Evans Optometrists at the low price of $20.00 for a 28 capsule box. Come in and see us for more information on MDeyes.
